Words At War, the series that brings you radio versions of the leading war books brings today the story of Etta Shiber and her exploits in the French Underground in Paris during 1941 – 1942. Today’s broadcast is from her book, “Paris Underground.

Ms. Shiber’s helped British pilots trapped behind enemy lines escape from the Nazi occupiers.

Ms Shiber and her colleague were captured by the Germans after their underground operation helping British pilots was discovered by the Germans. In May 1942, Ms Shiber was freed in a prisoner swap with the United States in exchange for Johanna Hofmann, a German who had been convicted of spying in the U.S.
